Local man turns love of 60s TV show into bookNEWPORT, R.I. – When Rhode Islander Michael Seggie watched the 1960s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, he was inspired to learn more about the local connection with the show. Little did he know when he started his search, a mansion located right in Newport was used for the exterior shots on the classic TV show. After learning this, he took his interest and turned it into a career becoming a tour guide in Newport and writing the historically haunting book, In the Shadows of a Newport Mansion.
If you want to read In the Shadows of a Newport Mansion, it is available now in local libraries and at Amazon: www.amazon.com/Shadows-Newport-Mansion-Michael-Seggie/dp/1492806897 Source: WPRI News, October 30, 2014.

It's been two weeks and you should have read the book by now. We're still waiting for you to tell us if it's worth buying ... or reading.

Don't waste your money. First, it's poorly written by a man who isn't all that bright, who thinks he knows everything; (2) it's printed in a type face, Ariel, I think, that's hard to read; and (3) a LOT of it is about other houses and people in Newport. If anyone wants to read it, I suggest you wait a few months when you can buy it used because it's not worth the $15 plus postage that I paid.

I checked this book out at the library last week and it's terrible! You're right, the type face is very difficult to read and the author makes an unbelievable number of grammatical and other errors. He comes across as a condescending know-it-all, but you don't have to read but a few paragraphs to realize he doesn't know as much as he thinks he does.

I found this book at the used book store last week and because it was only around $4, bought it. From the first page it's just one grammatical error after the other and like Joanna said, the sans serif typeface is hard to read. The author, Michael Seggie, also doesn't know how to use apostrophes or commas, which was so irritating that I could read only a few pages at the time. When he's writing about two or more family members, such as the "Bradleys" (plural), he inevitable writes "Bradley's," which is possessive. At one point when he was talking about a tour guide who passed along "anecdotes," to tour groups, he writes "antidotes." Did this man learn nothing in school and why didn't he have someone at least proofread what he wrote? I couldn't believe any reputable publisher would have touched something that reads like it was written by a high school dropout and when I checked, I found that it was self-published by a company called CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. As someone else commented, there isn't much about the "Dark Shadows" mansion and what there is, the author spends badmouthing the Carey family, the current owners of the house. I'm a fast reader but it took me a week to finish this book and I'm still mad at myself for wasting that much of my life reading something so badly written and self-serving.

If you read it all the way through, you did better than I did. I wanted to read it, even after I found out from reviews that it was more about other places than Collinwood, because I'm interested in old mansions from that time. It was like trying to read a term paper or book report by a kid who was failing English. What I did read of the book was just awful. I don't think that I've ever read or tried to read any other book that had so many mistakes.

Are you a Dark Shadows fan? Yes. I love the original Dark Shadows, but I didn't like the revival from the 90's and I hated the Johnny Depp movie. He and Tim Burton were DS fans and I thought that they would do it justice, but they tried to turn it into a comedy, and it wasn't even funny.

I ordered this book when it first came out and I agree with what everybody else says. It's a terrible book After I read the terrible reviews, here and on Amazon, I didn't buy the book. But a friend found one at a used bookstore and I tried to read it. Like everybody says, the author just can't write and his grammar is appalling. I wish that someone who knew how to write would do a book about Collinwood.
