Family searches for answers in unsolved murder of Misty Kidd
OLATHE, Kan. – On Saturday, July 17, 2010, Misty and Dallas Kidd (above) – married just one year but together five years – celebrated their first night out since daughter MacKinzie’s birth one month and one day earlier.
The Kidds, both graduates of Van Horn High School, attended a concert and even though Dallas admits his wife was somewhat tipsy because she hadn’t drank alcohol for almost a year because of her pregnancy, they stopped at the home of a “friend” who lived in the 3600 block of Freeman Avenue in Kansas City. They arrived around 11:30 p.m. and Dallas claims they were there around 15 to 20 minutes when there was a knock at the door.
The friend answered the door and Dallas heard someone asking for a person who did not live at the residence. One man asked another question and then Dallas heard his friend yell, “Gun!” at which point the friend and one of the men began to struggle on the front porch.
Misty was sitting on the couch and according to Dallas: "My wife ran towards me. We were both running toward the backroom and we heard the gunshots go off."
Misty was hit in the back and the bullet penetrated her heart. (According to some reports, Misty was still sitting on the couch when she was shot in the lower back.)
Misty Kidd, age 28, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital and she was buried on her first wedding anniversary.
Dallas later described one of the intruders as a young black man in his early to mid-20s. He did not see the other man. After the shots were fired, he said the men fled, but he did not hear a vehicle speeding away.
Joyce Payne, Misty’s mother, says: “She was just beautiful, all the way, through and through. If there was an argument taking place, it stopped when Misty walked into the room. She was funny, and she always smiled.”
Now, Dallas has to explain to his 4-year-old daughter Mackenzie why she doesn’t have a mother.
“I still keep a lot from her," he admits. "She knows that her mom is in heaven ....”
In conclusion, Dallas says: “I still wake up and check for her, to make sure it’s not a dream.”
But there are those who suspect Dallas knows more than he’s telling as evidenced by the comments sections on various websites. Following are three noteworthy comments posted shortly after the murder:
“Dallas is already sleeping around with other girls. He's a drug user and a small time dealer. You think they got fancy cars and that house on the salary of a Subway manager and a guy who flips cars and sells them on the curb?!? His wife was a nice lady but she married a piece of trash who is out womanizing 2 mos after she died, and that only reason she's dead is bc he went to the ghetto to sell some shit and the deal went south. Warn your friends, he's a charmer- but he's a dirty man.” – UsedCarKing (9/15/2010)
“Just 2 years ago I witnessed Dallas trying to pull a gun on security at a bar in Westport. They wrestled the gun away from him and restrained him until police arrived. When they searched him, he had 30 ecstasy pills. Found out later that he was selling them in the restroom. It was someone he sold them to that reported him having the gun. I'm not saying he had anything to do with it [Misty’s death] but I agree that he and the others present know more than they are telling. I hope whoever was involved is caught and is punished to the full extent of the law.” – Anonymous (7/25/2010)
“The truth is he was selling drugs and took his wife to a house in the middle of the night in an unsafe neighborhood known for drug deals. And it's a little more than suspicious to me that there were all of these people in the house (at least three other people besides Misty?) and yet there is no description of the murderer anywhere? Things that make you say hmmm!” – TheTruthWillComeOut (7/23/2010)
