Three Traditional Herbs Supporting a Good Mood Most Westernized people are familiar with stress. Currently 11% of Americans use antidepressants while uses of anti anxiety drugs have climbed 30% over the past decade. While there is much debate about the efficacy and safety of having high populations on mood-altering drugs, there are some natural alternatives that can promote relaxation and stress relief.
Benefits of Skullcap. Skullcap herb comes in Chinese and American varieties. Even though the Chinese variety doesn’t have any noticeable stress relief properties, drinking a cup of the American version can act as a sleep aid. Since it has been known to relieve insomnia, it shouldn’t be taken before operating heavy machinery. Simply brew up some Skullcap tea, and sit back for relaxation.
Lemon Balm and Stress. Lemon balm is a member of the mint family that has been used since the Middle Ages to promote sleep and ease anxiousness. Lemon balm works best when it is combined with other herbs like Valerian and chamomile.
Rhodiola Root and Mood. Rhodiola root (above) is widely gaining a following as a beneficial way to help boost mood. A study conducted in 2009 in Geneva Switzerland found that these roots have “potent (mood supporting) activity,” and may be used “in the control of senile dementia.” It also improves physical and mental performance and reduces fatigue.Source: Botanic Choice, July 31, 2013.
