Wolfscratch, do you know how long the Dermonds had lived in the house, or why they didn't employ any outside help? I'm nowhere near their age and I would have a hard time keeping a house of that size spotless, like it was described in the reports. I don't know if anyone else agrees with me, but I think there's something very strange about two people of that age and with their money living in a house of that size without at least having a cleaning woman come in once a week.

I'd also like to know why they didn't have a housekeeper. It isn't normal for people that age who can afford to hire a maid not to have one. Could there have been something in the house that they didn't want anyone to know about?

Hey Pat and Kitty... If my memory is correct, the Dermonds purchased the lot in 1994 and built their home a few years later. Although it was released that the Dermonds didn't have a housekeeper. Many times investigators/Sheriff Sills will not release info publicly due to privacy reasons. For instance if SS had said the Dermond's house and yard work was maintained by ACME Home Cleaning & Landscaping Co. The company would loose many of their RP/GW contracts overnight. From my info Russel and Shirley Dermond were in excellent health and very active. Shirley loved dancing and Russel was an avid walker, according to friends. So, I guess it is possible that they maintained their home and yard themselves... FYI: Sheriff Sills and 2 investigative reporters participated in a chatline about 2 weeks ago when the WSB TV2 "Lake Without Leads" article aired. We flooded him/them with questions. We asked, but could not get a transcript for the full WSB TV2 chatline discussion. The most significant info revealed, imo, was that the Dermonds alarm system was disconnected twice, two weeks before their murders. This combined with the security cameras being inoperable at the GW Guard/Gate House when the Dermond murders occurred is troubling, imo.. ___________________________________ chronicle.augusta.com/news/crime-courts/2014-05-16/decapitation-mystery-security-camera-wasnt-son-tells-ajcDecapitation mystery: Security camera wasn't on, son tells AJC By Christian Boone THE ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION <sniped> “They had a security system. And they always kept their doors locked,” Dermond said. “They were religious about that.” Dermond also revealed that cameras manning the gates at Reynolds Plantation weren’t functioning at the time. You can't help wondering if it was cult-related or something like that,” Keith Dermond said.

I think that the ladies might be onto something with their questions about the house keeping. I live in Appalachia, where most folks don't have much money, but the few senior citizens that do have a little money always have someone to help them with house work and yard cleaning. Even if the Dermonds were very active and in very good shape, it seems very strange that they didn't hire any outside help.
I work in law enforcement and I know that different agencies have different ways of doing things and maybe the sheriff did withhold information to protect some company, but things have a way of getting out, whether the information is officially released or not, because people talk. Just from what I've read about this case, there's something that just isn't right about the Dermonds' life-style. The fact that the alarm system had been disconnected and the security cameras were on the blink when the murders happened suggests an inside job. I know that when crimes are finally solved, a lot of times everyone is surprised by who did it, but to me, this case is something more than just random violence. I think that these people were targeted.

Ironically Sam, 'I also live in Appalachia <a rocks throw from the southern terminus of the AT>, and although not in law enforcement, retired from public safety; AFD'.. Thought seriously about scarfing you avatar<luv it>.. One other coincidence/parallel is that I live in a perceived secure gated community much like Reynolds Plantation Gate Water. Sam, I honor your opinion and agree with most of your statement; "when crimes are finally solved, a lot of times everyone is surprised by who did it, but this case is something more than just random violence". Especially the part about this crime being more than just random violence.. I began researching and investigating missing/murder cases/investigations in January 2008 searching for common denominators of investigations that are successful solved as opposed to those cases that grow cold. The catalyst for this decision was due to the tragic abduction of Meredith Hope Emerson; Blood Mtn Hiker, by a 61 year old sexual predator/serial killer; Gary M. Hilton, who held her captive for 4 days before killing and decapitating her. I witnessed them hidden in the Dawson Forest WMA woods near my newly built dream home on the 3rd day of her captivity. Thought they were only campers.. The Mystery on Blood Mountain, Part 1 www.nbcnews.com/watch/dateline/the-mystery-on-blood-mountain-part-1-317191235651

Deja vu; The Dermond abduction/decapitation/murders are reminiscent of a FL missing/murdered persons investigation in the 1980/90s; 'The Rogers Family Murders', imo. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills is a very intelligent, well trained<FBI/Quantico>, experienced, and instinctual investigator, and has taken the Dermond case very personally. With that said, many times getting to closely/involved/consumed with an investigation where such Evil is present can be very detrimental, sending the lead investigator/s into the abyss, imo. Seldom is the means, motive, and opportunity so obvious in such a heinous crime as it is in the Dermond murders, imo. _________________ www.11alive.com/story/news/local/investigations/2014/11/10/lake-oconee-murder-putnam-county/18811169/The former lives of the Dermonds have been turned inside out, there's not a single red flag they were living anything but ordinary lives. So why were they murdered? Decades of detective work have never produced a case more confounding for Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills. Six months have passed, and the case drives Sills crazy. "Why have I not solved that murder," he said. "I go to sleep every night thinking about this case…and I wake up every morning thinking about this case,"Sills said. ________________________ www.pulitzer.org/archives/7892Pulitzer Prize Winning Angels and Demons. Sunset One year had gone by since the murders, and then another, and now the investigators were deep into a third. They were working day and night, working weekends, putting off vacations, losing weight, gaining weight, growing pale and pasty and haggard, waking at 3 a.m. with a jolt and scratching notes on pads beside their beds. Their sergeant did not know if they would ever find the answer. As far as he was concerned, the case was not even in their hands. "I believe there are demons all around us," he would say, "just as I believe there are angels all around us." And when he looked at the evidence from the case before them now, studied the photos of the bodies and the ropes and the concrete blocks, the sergeant had no doubt that he and the other investigators were pursuing someone driven by Satanic forces. Of course demons were real. They were hunting one now... <sniped - read more>

I believe I was the first to say that I was bothered by the immaculate house when these people didn't have a maid or anyone to help with cleaning or yard work and it still bothers me. Their friends talk about how Shirley played bridge, took cakes to people, etc., but I've noticed that all the activities where people talk about interacting with them took place in public or at someone else's home. I haven't read anything about the couple giving parties, barbecues, or anything like that and this makes me wonder if someone else might have been living in the house with them, someone whom no one else ever saw. It wouldn't be the first time someone moved in on an old couple like that, or maybe they were willingly hiding someone. I know it sounds farfetched, but stranger things have happened. According to some of their neighbors, the Dermonds built this huge 2-story house, over 3,000 square feet, in 1999, when they would have already been in their 70s. There were also a lot of trees and bushes around the house, so that it couldn't be seen from the street, the water, or by neighbors, but the grounds weren't landscaped like other houses in the community. Another thing, the Dermonds were said to be millionaires and unless you inherit your money, you don't become a millionaire without stepping on some toes. I'm convinced there was more going on with these people than has been publicized.

Thanx for the reply, Catherine.. Yes, the house was immaculate, as was the crime scene. This is an indication of investigative and forensically aware, organized, and experienced perp/s, imo. According to Sheriff Sills the Dermonds and their family have been investigated and interrogated thoroughly. Sills was very open and transparent in the beginning of this investigation, but has become virtually silent as of late. Seems, that he may have hit a wall. As for the parties, when you live to be in your late 80s, most of your friends have passed on. Imo, the Dermond's secluded cul-de-sac lake lot, which was well hidden due to the thick trees and bushes, easy access, etc., was likely a prime consideration as to why they were targeted.. Seems, the decapitation of RD was meant to send a message.. This crime was well planned and meticulously executed, likely by a paramilitary trained organization according to the indicators. If you have someone who makes direct and veiled death threats, the means, and the opportunity. I would think that that would be a lead for investigators to follow up on.. jmo <Archive of WMAZ Dermond article links @ bottom of page --> www.13wmaz.com/story/news/local/2014/06/24/no-new-leads-in-dermond-murders/11327969/Sills says they've narrowed the time frame for the murders down to sometime between the afternoon of Friday May 2nd and Saturday May 3rd. He says the only possible witness they have was a caller who says, from a distance, she saw a man on the Dermonds' property that Saturday afternoon. "And that's the closest thing we have, we don't have a car description, we don't have a person description," Sills says. Sills says his department has done a thorough investigation into the Dermonds' background. He doesn't believe any of their immediate family committed the crime, but does think it would have to be someone they knew. Sills says the case is unlike other murders because of the 'unique circumstances'.

I agree that cutting the man's head off could have been to send a message, but to who? It could have been the cult that wanted to send a message to the sheriff. It could have had something to do with the family business and they were sending a message to someone in the family, or a Satanic cult with members in the neighborhood. Or it could have been a case of mistaken identity. Hired killers sometimes kill the wrong person.

So true, Sam. It could be any one of these... In a previous post you stated that you were in Law Enforcement.. Out of the four possible scenarios presented. Who has the motive, means, and opportunity, has made past death threats, both veiled and direct, and has a documented history of past dismemberment/s? Sam, all indicators point to a very well planned and professionally executed crime/mission, imo. The decapitation is the key, imo. Surprised the head hasn't shown up.

Just Food for thought; www.nuwaubianfacts.com/wesleysnipes.htmSnipes' company may buy property Actor's Amen-Ra films is interested in Putnam land adjacent to Nuwaubians The Macon Telegraph, May 11, 2000 EATONTON - A security guard group affiliated with action-adventure actor Wesley Snipes is interested in buying land in Putnam County to build a training facility. The 257 acres adjoins the 476-acre village owned by the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors on Shady Dale Road west of Eatonton. Snipes' production company, Amen-Ra films, owns The Royal Guard of Amen-Ra, the company planning to purchase the acreage, according to Snipes spokeswoman Justine Hah. Hah also said it is "pure coincidence" that The Royal Guard of Amen-Ra, which bills itself on the Internet as "an international, multi-level security and protection company," is looking at a piece of property that adjoins the Nuwaubian village. Hah refused to provide details about The Royal Guard of Amen-Ra, but she did confirm the group intends to build a training facility for private security guards. The Royal Guard of Amen-Ra's posting on the Internet site "cooljobs.com" seeks 200 people for "an elite team of highly trained men and women who will provide the following services: International and domestic risk management; intelligence and protective operations; V.I.P./executive protection to dignitaries and celebrities; special event security; counter-surveillance and counter terrorist measures." A representative of The Royal Guard of Amen-Ra used the 257-acre property's address - 290 Shady Dale Road - in December to file an application for a permit with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for the "purchase, movement, travel and storage of various weapons and ammunition nationwide to provide security, security guard and firearms training services." Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Wesley Rudy Snipes, who identified himself as Wesley Snipes' brother and a representative of The Royal Guard, came to his office in early November to talk to him about the group's plans for the property. Rudy Snipes is listed as the CEO of The Royal Guard on its incorporation papers with the Georgia Secretary of State's office. He compared the proposed training center to the state Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Sills said. <sniped - read more>

I agree that the some evidence might point to the Nuwabian cult, but if I was involved in the investigation, my question would be why didn't they make sure the woman's body didn't rise to the surface of the lake? I've done a little research and as you already know, I'm sure, the lake isn't natural and when that area was flooded, they left trees standing and the tops of some of them can still be seen just under the water. That's where the woman's body was found. It looked like they had tried to conceal the body and tried to keep it from rising. Number 1, whoever did it would have to know about the trees just under the surface and how to get to that part of the lake. Number 2, if these people were all that knowledgeable about murder, why didn't they know how to weigh down a body so that it wouldn't rise to the top? It's possible that a completely different person or group of people did the murders and cut the man's head off because they knew the Nuwabian cult would be blamed. What little I know about these Nuwabians from what I've found out in the last few days is that they're dangerous and I wouldn't want them around where I live, but so far as anyone knows, the cult didn't have any reason to target the Dermond couple. I think that the sheriff should check out other houses that are in about the same location in other areas of the lake like this house is, not right on the lake, but where the lake runs off into the woods like it does at this house.
