The Golden State Serial Killer (Joseph DeAngelo) who has finally been caught, went to school in Bath, NY (Steuben County). He later became a police officer. But, his parents lived in Elmira NY (Chemung County which borders Steuben County) and he may have lived with them there or at a minimum visited there. I know this is a long shot but wonder if there is any possibility of obtaining his DNA for a comparison. As I recall Mary Theresa was assaulted and I also am pretty sure there is viable DNA as I believe they ran DNA of others over the years. I was the same age as Mary Theresa Simpson and for a short period of time she went to the same school I did. She was friends with friends of mine and groups of kids would gather at my friends house where they had ping pong tables, pool table and we could play records etc. I distinctly remember Mary Theresa there and she seemed to be a very sweet, friendly girl. When I read about her murder in the newspaper it was heartbreaking and a loss of innocence in seeing this happen to a girl of my age. I believe it is the only unsolved murder in Elmira, NY. It would be wonderful if they were finally able to solve this horrific murder and give peace and resolution to this family. This innocent child had so much life to live.
Welcome to our group, Janet.
DeAngelo would have been 18 when this little girl was murdered. From what I've been able to find out, his father was in the Army and they moved around a lot, but his mother was from the area around Bath, New York. I'm sure that they would have visited his mother's folks at times, so if he was in the area in March of 1965, there's a possibility that he killed her. I checked and it's only around 40 miles from Bath to Elmira. I believe there's a DNA sample available.

That's sad. I wonder how accurate the DNA profile was considering how old the sample was once they had the technology to do DNA testing, and assuming they did a good enough job not allowing it to be contaminated. There's also the possibility that the offender has never killed or committed any other crimes since, which is why they haven't found the person because he never made it into the offender database. I'd assume he's probably quite old, or maybe even dead, by now. I doubt they'll ever be able to solve this case, sadly. my mom was last person to see her alive as she was told to walk her halfway home, mom spoke of this day a lot and her friend mary.sadly my mom was diagnosed and died from cancer after her 48th birthday, she asked one thing of me just 1 thing to tell the truth of who did this to her friend...it was my grandfather..moms dad.my grandfather sexually assaulted my mother her entire child hood was a violent man and an alcoholic, brutal is best term.mom held many secrets that in last 6 months of her life she revealed to me horrific cruel brutal heartbreaking words cannot tell you...but 1 thing just 1 haunted her because she knew she was there she saw him do this.i have kept my word I did twice anon. email local police with this info I did give them grandfathers name my moms name and nothing...I am his granddaughter and willing to do a familiar dna I just need do it without rest of moms family finding out due to fact all are violent dangerous individuals....if anyone has a way to help me to the finish line with moms last wish to tell the truth to give the family the true answer it would be greatly appreciated.thank you for anyone who responds.

Welcome. I'm sorry about your mother and that the police ignored your emails. It's been more than a half-century since this little girl was killed. I hope someone will be able to suggest a way for you to get the attention of the authorities.

Have you thought about going to one of the surviving relatives of the little girl? A brother, sister, or perhaps a cousin?

I did we are working together now to piece all of it together I would think that the present police chief would be thrilled to compare your DNA to the sample they have so that he could say that he was the one who finally solved the case.

MomKnew Just a thought/suggestion-The last article (at least that I'm aware of)about Mary Theresa's death was in the Elmira newspaper the Star Gazette, on March 15, 2014. In that article it indicates anyone with information should call 1-607-271-HALT the tip line. Even though you have contacted the police prior, I would suggest trying to call this number and leave information. If you don't get positive feedback, or contact after a reasonable amount of time (week or so?). I would then contact the Star Gazette newspaper, and advise them of the information that you have, that you have made contact more than once with the police department without any follow up and would they have a reporter that would meet with you to go over this story and hopefully research and possibly do a follow up story. Do you know if anyone (family etc)has requested and received a copy of the police reports etc on this case? I may be wrong, but it might be possible to proceed with DNA comparison using just your DNA. I'm very sure there was mention of there being DNA on her from the perpetrator. I don't know if contacting the State Police would be a remote possibility if the Elmira Police Dept. does not have the resources to proceed etc. I remember reading that the State Police Investigator, I think Officer Dillon (I could be wrong)was very strongly affected by this horrific attack and death as were other officers. This child deserves justice and not being lost and forgotten over time.

I knew of this women that was very mean and back then child abuse was not talked of but I could tell you of a couple times where she would grab maybe a broom or hanger to beat you with . EPD I can remember when I was young you would visit my house and take my parents for interviews, at least two occasions if not more I do have questions that have never been answered

She could have been killed by a woman, but when a woman kills a kid, it's usually her own child or some other child in the family. There's a big difference between hitting someone with a broom or hanger and killing them.
Who visited your house and took your parents for interviews?

You don't know this person that I refer too Are you a police officer Sam is a deputy sheriff. But I don't see what that has to do with anything. You asked if the murder could have been committed by a woman and Sam was kind enough to reply. Now you tell him he doesn't know the person to whom you are referring. How could he or anyone else know unless you tell us?

If I offended the Deputy I do apologize. I asked if he was a Police officer because they are the ones that came to my house. I would think that they would know this women. My dad would tell my brother and I if she was ever out and drinking to never leave her alone. That's why I asked

I’m sorry but I don’t believe a grandfather did it. I know for a FACT that her Aunt and cousins did not walk her to Harriet St because my sister and I were rounding the corner to Janowski’s store in Market and Harriet Sts. when Mary hollered my name. She was between Judson and Ceri Sts. We waited for her then my sister went in the store snd I waited for Mary, we stood there talking and a man stood by truck parked across the road facing Madison Ave smoking a cigarette watching us. I asked Mary if she knew him she said no. We talked a while and I went in the store to get my sister. We came out no more than a minute and Mary, the truck and the man were gone. Let me add that Mary was not shy with men. We use to go to the movies and she would go sit on men’s laps and come back with candy for us all bought with the money she got. I loved Mary, she was my friend but if people lie then how can her murderer be found. It was not her father, he rode a bicycle and didn’t drive. He loved his daughter. I’m not saying anything I didn’t tell the detectives back then. I know that man I had never seen before did this. I lived in that neighborhood all my life and never seen him. The detective and my parents not to tell anyone about it. I was 13 and I’ll never forget it. I’m praying they will find the person. This has not been reread for mistakes so please overlook any.

I lived in the same apartment building as Mary Simpson. Our family lived on the second floor and she lived on the floor above us. I was 13 at the time and I had never seen her in the building. We did have police detectives visit our apartment but were unable to provide any help. Shortly after that my mom and us four kids moved out to another apartment building. I understand that DNA was taken. May I suggest that it be compared to the DNA of the Spahalski brothers, Robert and Stephen Spahalski both in prison for separate murders. Stephen's murder victim was in Elmira while Robert's victims were in Rochester, NY. Both are presently in prison. They were probably too young when Mary was murdered, they were nine. My mother actually was married to their father at one time. I'm not saying that they were guilty of Mary's death but I would have hoped that their DNA was checked out with Mary's. The Spahalskis were a big family.
