Six Haunted Railway Stations
Ghost. Think of this word and your blood runs cold. No, this article is not to make you believe in ghosts; but tales of the restless spirits of the night linger in these old railway stations. Of course, hundreds of thousands of people pass through train stations, so it is no wonder some of them remain behind. Let’s have a quick look at a few of the world’s most haunted train stations:
Connolly Station (Ireland). Connolly Station (above) sustained bombing damage in an attack during the Second World War in 1941. Since then it is believed the buildings have been haunted by phantom dolsiers. A soldier in grey walking along an unused platform was witnessed by the Irish Ghost Hunters. A spooky incident occurred wherein a security guard spotted two figures with military gear on a camera, but by the time he reached the area, they disappeared.
Glen Eden Railway Station (New Zealand). This station, built to serve Wailumete Cemetery, and its trains once transported the dead as well as those visiting nearby cemeteries. In 2001, a new café was added as part of a restoration project, but while the additions were being made, many workers saw what they believed were ghostly figures. Some have witnessed a ghost resembling Alec MacFarlane, a railway worker who was killed when a mailbag hook from a passing train struck him between his eyes. Others have seen a phantom grey-bearded man in a trench coat, who vanishes into thin air. There have also been sightings of the face of an apparition at a window.
Macquarie Fields Train Station (Australia). During daytime, this suburban railway station lying south-west of Sydney seems quiet and peaceful and isn’t horrifying at all, who are unknown of its haunting stories. But at night, this station is said to be haunted by the spirit of a teenage girl and many have seen her apparition. According witnesses, she is wearing an ensemble suitable for dancing, which is covered in blood. She walks about Macquarie Fields Station screaming and clutching her breast, her screams growing louder and louder. She has also been observed sitting in the station moaning and groaning in pain. Ghost Haunting Australia investigated the Macquarie Fields Train Station and observed what they defined as “ectoplasmic manifestations.”
Panteones Metro Station (Mexico). Panteones Metro Station, on Line 2 of the railway serving Mexico City, is said to be haunted. The name “Panteones” itself means “graveyards,” and the station was so named because it was built close by two old cemeteries. Many times employees have heard phantom knocks on the walls and seen shadowy lumps appearing and disappearing in the tunnel between Panteones and Tacuba stations. In 2009, a video filmed at the station recorded screams along the track heard regularly after the station closes at night.
Union Station (Phoenix, Arizona). Until 1950, Union Station was one of the busiest places in the city until the new airport became Phoenix’s main gateway to the outside world. It was closed in 1995 by Amtrak and since has been used only occasionally for tourist trains. Currently, Union Station is comprised of offices and its employees have had numerous encounters with “Fred,” the resident ghost. A maintenance manager, Dudley Weldon, named the ghost Fred, according to The Arizona Republic. The manager himself and other employees have seen a phantom figure on numerous occasions. The station also has a heavy door that opens and closes by itself and for no apparent reason.
Waterfront Station (Canada). One of the most haunted stations in Canada, Waterfront Station in Gastown, Vancouver, built in 1915, is said to be the most haunted building in the city. Many a time, security personnel have experienced horrifying events. Once when a security guard was on his rounds, he saw a woman dressed like a 1920s flapper dancing to music, but as he approached, she disappeared and the music stopped. Another guard came face to face with the shining white ghost of an old woman who approached him. Another guard claimed to have seen a number of desks rearranging themselves. He was so frightened, he literally ran from the scene. In addition to the actual ghost sightings, people often hear phantom footsteps in the station.
