Surveillance video of English pub shows ghostly activity
The Ye Olde Man and Scythe pub in Bolton, England, released footage Friday that showed the lights flickering and a shadowy figure emerge before the tape stopped. The pub has a history of stories of people haunting the establishment.
Something didn’t leave at last call. A historic English pub – famed for several spirits that haunt the establishment — recently released mysterious footage on Friday that suggests a spooky visitor made an early morning appearance. The surveillance camera captures light flickering and a shadowy figure emerge and roam through the Ye Olde Man and Scythe pub in Bolton, England. The video then mysteriously stopped taping at 6:18 a.m. Though possibly an electrical glitch others believe it may have been paranormal activity.
Manager Tony Dooley told the Manchester Evening News he found a broken glass on the floor. “To be honest I was a bit concerned – I’m a bit of a skeptic when it comes to ghosts, but you become more of a believer when you see things like that.” The pub, which dates to 1251, is the fourth-oldest in Britain and “it’s had its fair share of deaths and whatnot,” he continued.
This includes the legend of the Seventh Earl of Derby, James Stanley, who supposedly haunts the pub, which his family owned. He was at the location before he was beheaded during civil war in 1651, the newspaper reported. The chair he sat in before he was executed is still located in the pub, the newspaper reported. Hundreds of soldiers and civilians were also killed outside the pub in the Bolton Massacre of 1644.
With such a bloody history, it has long been considered a hot spot for paranormal activity and a psychic evening held there in 2006 reportedly found it to be haunted by at least 25 spirits, including a woman who hanged herself in the cellar several centuries ago, an 8-year-old girl and a phantom dog.
